These Not-So-Obvious Products May Be A Danger To Your Child

Light bulbs:  How many parents does it take to change a light bulb?  At least two.  If you are changing a bulb by yourself with a young child underfoot, it may be a disaster waiting to happen.  The newer bulbs on the market, both LEDs, and fluorescents contain toxic chemicals like mercury.  We’ve likely all been on a stepladder and dropped a light bulb on the floor.  If your little one is nearby, the shards of glass and chemicals released can cause serious injury.  Always make sure that another adult is present to monitor small children when changing bulbs.

There is no getting around the necessity of these products in the home, but knowing their dangers is half the battle.  Along with regular childproofing procedures, always keep small and hazardous items out of a child’s reach.  The best way to avoid injury is to put items away immediately after use.  A curious child can easily climb on a stool or chair and get into these items when you are not looking.  And always be sure that while working around the house, someone else is keeping an eye on your child.

Were you aware of the dangers of some of these products?  Has your child ever obtained an injury from a product that you were not aware was unsafe?  Leave us your thoughts in the comments, and be sure to check back with Mommy Underground for all the latest tips to keep your little ones safe.
