Give Mom A Unique Gift She Will Cherish Forever

As Mother’s Day approaches, we take the time to celebrate what is perhaps the most important influence in our lives – our moms.

Moms are the glue that holds families together, giving love, care, and support for a lifetime.

While there will be gifts of flowers, perfume, and jewelry this Mother’s Day, there are some far more personal and heartwarming ways to show the mom in your life how much she means to you – we’ve even made unique ones you can download today!

She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.

She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.

She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.

Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her:

Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all. (Proverbs 31:  26-29)

If you ask any mom, the gifts they hold closest to their heart are those precious handmade items from their children, for those hold the most meaning.

With a little imagination and thought on what is most special to the mom in your life, you can create a special keepsake that mom will treasure forever.

  • How about a scavenger hunt for mom?  Present her with a card made by the little ones along with a “clue” that directs her to find another little note leading to a special gift at the end, like one of the project ideas below.

She can be prompted to follow clues that evoke special memories throughout the house.  Older kids can come up with their favorite places in the house where they spend time with mom, and dads can help the little ones to draw pictures.

For example, “Your next clue can be found where we cuddle together for storytime,” leading to the next clue, and so on.  At the end of the “hunt,” present mom with a special handmade gift.

Mommy Underground has made special clue cards for you to download here.

  • Make a scrapbook – With help from dad, kids can sort through photos of themselves with mom and write a little memory or draw a picture about what is special about that time they shared.

Inexpensive scrapbooks can be found at craft stores, and the covers can be decorated with stickers, paper hearts or flowers, or a hand-drawn portrait of mom herself!

Older children can be prompted to write a letter to mom, all about the special things they appreciate about her and their favorite times together.

And Mommy Underground has a special keepsake for you – a questionnaire all about mom!  Have kids answer these fun questions about mom. Let your kids fill out the form on their own or have dad help out with younger kids to include this special gift. Their answers are sure to cause giggles that will last a lifetime! This is the perfect thing to add to that scrapbook or is suitable for framing.

You can find the questionnaire here: “All About Mommy

And don’t forget about that special grandmother you hold dear; there’s one available for her as well!  “All About Grandma

  • Make a coupon book – Older kids can write out little coupons on construction paper that mom can “cash in” when she chooses.  They can be for help with household chores, a time to go out one-on-one with each child, or even for something as simple (and cherished) as a hug when she needs it most.

Little ones can draw pictures on the coupons that represent a special time to share with mom.  (Or dad can offer some time to spend with the kids so mom can take that much-needed break!)

  • A lasting impression – Perhaps a mother’s favorite treasure is a craft with her children’s hand-prints.  There are so many ideas for this one, only limited by your imagination!

With the help of dad or another family member, kids can trace their hands onto construction paper, cut them out, and attach them to green pipe-cleaner stems.  Several of these can be made in different colors, decorated, and put into a little vase that mom can display with pride.

Kids can also make a hand-print card, using paint or a stamp pad to get a true impression of their little hands.  There are several great poems online to be used with hand-print art, and these little works of art can even be framed before presenting to mom.

Another great gift idea is a plaster impression of the child’s hand or footprint.  Craft stores have many options for casting kits that can be made to hang on the wall or be used as an ornament on this year’s Christmas tree.

You can take this idea one “step” further by making mom a personal stepping stone for the backyard or garden.  These kits are also available at most craft stores, or with help from dad, a simple mix of concrete can be poured into a mold and decorated with the child’s hand or footprints.

They can even inscribe a little message, picture, or their name and date, and can also decorate the stepping stone with small, smooth stones or glass gems purchased at the dollar store.

And don’t forget – you can create virtually any kind of picture using hand-prints!  A child’s hands can be a butterfly’s wings, become a favorite animal, or positioned in the shape of a heart.  There are hundreds of ideas online, so get creative!

  • Making memories with Mom – With an adult’s help, little kits can be put together with inexpensive items from the dollar store to give the gift of mother and child time!
  1. You can purchase a large mixing bowl and fill it with wooden spoons, cupcake wrappers, small candies or sprinkles – even a new apron or tea towel – so mom and the little ones can spend a day baking together.
  2. Or purchase a flower pot at the home improvement store and fill it with seeds, gardening gloves and a small trowel so mom and the kids can do some planting outdoors on a sunny day.
  3. Another great idea?  Have the little ones paint the flower pot with bright colors, flowers, or those all-important hand-prints!
  4. You can purchase a sun hat, turn it over, and fill it with sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm and some snacks.  This can symbolize a long walk or hike with the kids, a day at the lake, or some other special outdoor activity to share together.

The possibilities are truly endless, and this is a great place to include those handmade “coupons” for mom – “Good for making a batch of cookies together,” or “Good for a long walk together.”  Mom is sure to cherish some quality time away from the hustle and bustle of the normal routine.

Remember, the most cherished memories a mother holds in her heart are those special times with her family.  Use your imagination, get creative, and show mom how much she means to you this Mother’s Day.
