Dealing With Your Adolescent’s ‘Bad Friends’

  1. Address Unwanted Behavior

Instead of just saying that you don’t like their friends, be specific about what you don’t like about the behavior of the friend, and how it will affect your child.

For example, “Hanging out with someone who smokes pot, will likely lead you to smoke pot and get in the way of your college goals.”

Just don’t overdo it. Always pointing out bad behavior of their friends can lead to the same outcome as criticisms.

Emphasize how you are not judging them or their friends, but that you just want to see them make choices that benefit them and add to their quality of life.
