Shocking New Selfie Trend Is Causing Tragic Results

Technology Review reported on the fatal fad of the selfie shot:

This trend has been accompanied by a more tragic one. In 2014, 15 people died while taking a selfie; in 2015 this rose to 39, and in 2016 there were 73 deaths in the first eight months of the year. That’s more selfie deaths than deaths due to shark attacks.”

Close to 24 billion selfies were uploaded to Google Photos, according to Technology Review.

This has given Hemank Lamba and some friends, with Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, a huge data pool in which to conduct research about deaths during selfies.

Results have already discovered that falling from a high place is the most frequent selfie death, followed by selfies involving water.

Knowing this, the team at Carnegie Mellon University is building an app using a proven effective algorithm that will recognize dangerous selfies and elicit some sort of warning.

Sadly, people are obviously in need of this app, disregarding basic survivals instincts that may have prevented some untimely deaths.

Let’s look at some of the deaths that attracted a lot of media attention for occurring while taking a selfie.
