Calming Phrases When Tantrums Strike

3. When you want to say, “Don’t be upset, it’s just a puzzle!” Replace it with, “I get upset too when things don’t work out. Let’s see what we can do to get our frustration out.”

We all have things that get to us that don’t seem logical to someone else; like the dishwasher being loaded the “wrong” way.

Kids, just like adults, have a right to feel a certain way in response to frustration, they don’t have a right, however, to act out when they feel like it.

Let your child know it is okay to be upset. Suggest calming techniques like shaking your limbs and head to get all the anger out. This usually makes them laugh to see you wiggling all about.
